Architecture is the branch that deals with the construction and design of buildings. Architecture is more than the creation of buildings and physical spaces. It is an art of shaping human experiences, influencing emotions, supporting well-being, and enhancing connections between people and their surroundings. When we see architecture as a whole, we consider it limited to construction and building development only. In architecture, we design walls, roofs, and buildings. Building is closely associated with human experiences.

Human habits and behaviour are closely associated with the spaces we live in. Architecture and human behaviours are closely related to each other. Emotions depend on our surroundings. Some rooms need to be cosy; some should be vibrant or relaxing. The bedroom with warm yellow light and light colours gives us a feeling of warmth and relaxation. Design themes also enhance our mood. Architects and interior designers design homes according to clients’ requirements and habits. A kids’ bedroom should be different from a parents’. A workplace has different design psychology.

Architecture connects the built environment with human emotions. Modern homes aren’t just minimalistic; Indian homes demand more storage, which isn’t characteristic of minimalism. European homes are designed according to the lifestyle of European people. But the same design concept may not suit for indian people’ homes.

Some spaces are small, yet they look big. The simplest answer to this is that the colours we see with our eyes make it possible. Reflecting colours make a room feel bigger and wider. White colour makes a room feel wide and big. This is linked to our senses. Actually, a room is not big, but we feel it that way because we see it due to the proper use of colour, material, and design psychology in it. Different architectural and design elements influence emotions differently. A wavy line gives us a sense of motion. Vertical lines increase the height of the ceiling, while horizontal lines make it wider.

Every colour also affects different moods and psychology. Warm colours are associated with energy and warmth. Yellow colours feel warm to us; red colour gives an aggressive feeling. Purple colour gives a feeling of royalty. Blue colour gives calmness. The colour selection during the design process is very important.

Materials and texture also affect our emotions. We feel materials and textures with our senses. Natural materials give a sense of connection to nature and provide us with a feeling of getting closer to nature. Materials are of many types and have characteristics associated with them that affect emotion. The integration of plants and natural elements within a home can influence our mind. Open courtyards, natural ventilation, and sunlight provide a healthy environment. Sustainable design is the concept where we talk about integration with nature and using eco-friendly materials in designing spaces.

Residential space provides comfort, belonging, and security. Educational spaces give us a feeling of curiosity, concentration, and creativity. Healthcare spaces are associated with calmness, reassurance, and privacy. Workspaces contain motivation, collaboration, and productivity.

Architecture is the basis of any country. Major economic circulation is happening through heritage, IT hubs, malls, huge towers, and governmental buildings. Architecture preserves cultural identity that is directly and indirectly connected with human emotion and a way of living through generations. Roads in older generations are too short because of the absence of a lot of vehicles. People in the past preferred to walk on roads; hence, cities were compact at that time.

Traditional architecture reflects cultural values; some temples are carved with intricate carvings. Temples reflect historical scenes like the Mahabharata and the Ramayana. This shows our emotional attachments to the history and surroundings. Religious spaces have an emotion of divine power and peace. The tradition is preserved through such iconic structures.

Simplicity, visual clarity, and clean lines are shown by Minimalist architecture. The term Biophilic architecture means a connection with nature, sensory experiences, and well-being.

The role of architects and interior designers is to understand the psychological needs, behaviour, and habits of users. The space should be user-friendly and accessible to the individual associated with it. Creating spaces with emotion is the art that every architect and designer should learn.
