We are living in a modern era where we can watch anything on a small device or television. Social media is there for watching unlimited short videos with a single click. We have a lot of information nowadays. Once we start watching reels, we almost spend an hour watching them. Many of us do not really realise that we are ignoring opportunities because of this timepass that we are doing.
Netflix, instagram, facebook, youtube has a content that human like most, because these apps know the psychology of users. They suggest what we actually want. The algorithm knows our taste. The people who are really building something great don’t fall into the trap of these visual media.
The psychologist Barry Schwartz’s Paradox of Choice (2004)- the principle that while option variety feels like freedom, excessive choice leads to anxiety, high expectations, and regret. The modern Streaming platforms haven’t freed us from content scarcity. As these platforms give us the freedom to watch anything at our convenience, we are not thinking beyond the box. We are held in a loop of scrolling through stuff.
Some sites are distracting; they decrease our attention span and concentration. Even underaged people also watch adult content. If you want to watch a movie on Netflix, there are hundreds of movie thumbnails available. But your mind is unable to make a decision about which movie you really like to watch. Because while exploring hundreads of them you have to eliminate 99 out of it. And this is the biggest task for the mind.
Buying subscriptions to platforms is also like a trap. Because once you buy it, you buy it again due to the more fun and relaxation you get from watching this stuff. I don’t know how many of you noticed it or not. But 30-second reels decreased your attention span. Sometimes ads trigger you to buy something beyond your capacity, or if it does, then you actually buy the thing or another subscription. A lot of information really taken us in dilema, A dilema of choice.
While choosing what you actually want to watch is a long task. Because you are in a rush, you decrease your attention span and also get decision fatigue while deciding these tasks. Social media is good if you use it as a source of information. But most people get distracted while using it. People are really in mess, due to urge in searching unreal things.
The main question arises while looking into this scrolling topic: How to reduce this distraction and use the time in a proper way? A better answer to this is that we have to limit our sources of knowledge, and entertainment. Don’t keep your phone with you all the time. Always value your time. You can also schedule the time for watching reels. You can give 15 min to this task.
Unlimited access is not equivalent to unlimited enjoyment. You have to limit yourself. True freedom in the digital era comes from intentional boundaries, not infinite choices.
